Luke Skywalker

Kenner (General Mills), Cincinnati · 1978

Injection-molded plastic, painted · yellow telescoping lightsaber · 3¾ inches · Kenner product no. 38180

One of the four figures first delivered by mail for the 1977 Early Bird certificate, then sold on the 12-back card at $1.99. In its earliest form the lightsaber telescopes twice. That form carries the market.

Photographs: awaited — see the case below.

The case

Stations are fixed for every figure in the Cabinet. A station with no permissioned photograph is shown as owed — the frame stays, the photograph is being sought.

The Christmas there were no toys

Kenner held the Star Wars license for Christmas 1977 but had no finished toys — a plastic line takes close to a year to develop. What it sold instead was the Early Bird Certificate Package, at $7.99: a display stand, stickers, a club card, and a postage-paid certificate good for four figures when they existed. Newspapers reported the packages sold out in New York and Chicago; some shops refused to stock them. The figures — Luke, Princess Leia, Chewbacca, and R2-D2 — were mailed in the spring of 1978. How many certificate packages were sold is disputed in the sources: 500,000 in some, 600,000 in others.

The saber

The figure's lightsaber is yellow and telescopes out of the right arm. The first version telescopes twice — the shaft slides from the arm, then a thinner tip slides from the shaft. Kenner replaced it early with a one-piece saber; the Star Wars Collectors Archive gives the reason as the manufacturing cost of a two-part saber that required assembly, and auction houses add complexity and fragility. The often-repeated explanation — a choking hazard — appears in no period or Kenner source. Only three figures ever carried the double-telescoping saber: Luke, Ben Kenobi, and Darth Vader. Luke's is the most frequently found of the three because most Early Bird kits included it; later Early Bird mailings already contained the one-piece saber, so an Early Bird Luke is not automatically a double-telescoping one.

Made in Hong Kong

Production was Hong Kong, divided among factories collectors identify as Kader, Smile, and Unitoy. The leg stamp reads © G.M.F.G.I. 1977 — dated a year before the figure was sold. Country-of-origin families include Hong Kong in several stamp forms, Taiwan, no-COO, and, later, China. The Taiwan figure, with glossy dark pants, is a distinct and scarcer 12-back form.

The hair

Blond is the reference colour. Dark brown hair is found primarily in North America and light brown primarily in Europe. A reddish-blonde form is documented in the references with exactly two specimens. Orange-hair forms are documented by collectors in more than one tone. The researcher consensus this page follows treats these as one paint spectrum under several overlapping names, not as separate Kenner variants.

Abroad

Palitoy (Britain): figures made at Kader in Hong Kong and assembled at Coalville; no double-telescoping Luke is known on a Palitoy card. Japan: ordinary American Kenner cards distributed with a Takara sticker over the Kenner logo — a 12-Back-B example graded AFA 80 sold for $3,115.20 in November 2025. Toltoys (Australia and New Zealand) used much wider bubbles. Meccano (France) printed the droid names reversed on the cardback — D2-R2 and Z6-PO. Kenner Canada issued bilingual cards.

Maker not recorded

Jim Swearingen is documented — by the University of Cincinnati, his institution — as Kenner's principal conceptual designer for the line from 1976 to 1979: he urged the license and built the mock-ups behind the 3¾-inch scale. Conceptual design is not sculpting. No source consulted for this catalog names the person who sculpted this figure's head or body, and the entry is left open rather than filled.

His forms — the stops

SW1 [12-back-a]The first card. The double-telescoping saber is documented on this back — an AFA 85 example made $84,370 at Hake's in March 2025.
SW1 [12-back-b]Whether the double-telescoping saber shipped on the B back is disputed — documented by Fantha Tracks, absent from Kellerman's run list. Unresolved.
SW1 [12-back-c]The double-telescoping saber is documented on this back — an AFA 85 example made $15,600 at Heritage in August 2018.
SW1 [12-back-d · 12-back-e]Later 12-back printings, standard one-piece saber.
SW1 [20-back · esb · rotj-77a]The continuing carded run — 20-back, the Empire Strikes Back backs, and the Return of the Jedi 77-Back A, where the farmboy's packaging run ends. There is no Power of the Force farmboy Luke.
SW1 [sw-m2]The Early Bird Kit (catalog SW-M2): the mail-away form, spring 1978 — white mailer, vacuform tray, the four figures in baggies. A kit graded AFA 85 made $32,450 at Hake's in January 2025.
SW1 aDark brown hair. A letter subvariant — the finish differs, the figure does not.
SW1 a1The double-telescoping bundle: the figure with saber SW-a59. The record form — an AFA 90 example with the saber fully extended made $161,458 at LCG in 2025.
